JMPP 60th Anniversary Fellowship

John Moores Painting Prize winner of 2018 Jacqui Hallum was awarded a three month fellowship and residency at Liverpool School of Art and Design, which culminated in an exhibition of the new work produced in Liverpool ‘The View from the Top of the Pyramid’ at the Walker Art Gallery.

In the words of Jacqui Hallum:
“Being in the city of Liverpool brought new inspirations into the studio, the city’s architecture, ballet stage designs found in the Art School’s Library and images of the temporary altar in the Anglican cathedral archives. I was drawn to the Medieval Limoges enamel plaques at the Walker Art Gallery and to the large tapestries at the Lady Lever Art Gallery. These all formed a rich soup for me.

The floor of the temporary Liverpool studio was regularly saturated with spilt paint. I began to soak this up with paper and fabrics like enormous monoprints. I then painted onto these grounds under the harsh light of a projector. I couldn’t see the entire image, only the small passage I was working on. The relation between these processes kept alive the conversation between the seen and the unseen, the conscious and the unconscious.”
