John Moores Painting Prize

John Moores, chairman of the Littlewoods Organisation, and Hugh Scrutton, director of the Walker Art Gallery came together in 1957 to launch the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, which was the start of an enduring partnership between the Moores family, the Walker and the city of Liverpool.

Over six decades the John Moores Painting Prize has helped to launch and support the work of a number of British artists and is acknowledged as a defining moment in the careers of many distinguished painters.

The John Moores Painting Prize is hugely popular with the visiting public, with recent exhibitions attracting record-breaking numbers of visitors. The regular acquisition of the first prize-winning works by the Walker, along with a significant number of other prize-winners, has led to the gallery holding a significant collection of post-war British painting, as a permanent asset for the nation.

The John Moores Painting Prize now benefits from a wonderful legacy of artist and juror alumni.
